Mothers for Community Life was started by two mothers who lost sons in the 2010
riots. Its purpose was to build self-reliant, healthy local economies and communities
for their children to grow up in. Several mothers had inherited large fortunes
that they used to leverage further funding from governments at all levels, and
from corporations, assisted by the 2000 Grandparents Foundation. They hired
poor mothers as organizers to create many co-ops (especially child care), credit unions,
land trusts and other community economic institutions, co-ordinated in each
community by a mothers' circle elected by all the local mothers and guided by
children's well-being indicators and other statistical measures of community
health. By 2015 they were a very powerful force.
